The collab no one expected... TikTok x Disney+
The biggest news in the creator space this week involves Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, Yoda and many more fictional characters we all know and love.
It looks like Disney has decided to loosen it's grip on its IP once again, but this time on social media.
If you missed it:
Disney+ has signed a deal that will allow creators on TikTok to use specific scenes and moments from Disney+ shows in content.
This is really great for:
🎬 Nostalgia creators
🧸 Kids content creators
🍿 Film and TV review creators
😲 React channels
🏰 And obviously, anyone making Disney-specific content
But even if you're not in those content categories; this still reads as a strong signal to the entire creator economy that the tides are starting to change when it comes to legacy companies and their IP.
Disney+ wants to let creators do what they do best and take their existing content and remix it!
We can only hope more companies follow.
The best part about this deal is that creators will get access to assets from hundreds of films and series across Disney's library... legally.
Sure you can screen record it, but prepare for a copyright strike.
Who knows, maybe in 10 years we will look back at copyright strikes and laugh that it ever existed!? This feels like the first step in the right direction.
Fandoms are powerful, and Disney+ has finally recognised it.
According to TikTok, "fans shared an average of 6.5 million Film and TV-related posts on TikTok each day last year"
That stat is kind of mind blowing.
Makes sense why Disney would want to fuel that momentum.
The key here is: Disney+ isn't promoting these films through their own professional profile.
They have a fandom that makes the videos for them.
Thousands of people who love this stuff enough to edit it in their spare time, for free, because they want to.
And now Disney has found a way to push that content out to more people, on their own app.
Now the bit we're less sure about.
Select TikTok creators and videos will have the chance to appear on the Disney+ app in their new Verts category.
(The good thing is, creators need to opt in for this).
This reminds us of when Spotify launched its TikTok-style feed for music. Vertical snippets of new songs, there to help you find new artists.
Great in theory. But does anyone still use it?
Verts feels much the same. Its there to boost discoverability of Disney+ shows, which makes complete sense for Disney.
What we're less clear on is what's in it for the creator.
I guess you can brag to your friends and family you were featured on the Disney+ app?
Add a screenshot to your portfolio?
But beyond that, not much else.
The opt-in is a real win though.
Creators choosing whether their content gets used, instead of finding out about it afterwards.
That's how it should work, and we're glad they've built it that way.
But promotion in exchange for exposure?
We're never big fans of that model.
You know our position on this.
Exposure is not a form of payment.
So that's our take - what about you?
Hit reply and tell us, would you opt in?
Would you be happy with a feature on the Disney+ app?
